When all that’s standing between you and the meat of a fresh coconut is the right tool, the one to have in your hand is Vacu Vin’s coconut opener ($9.99). New on the market, from the company that produces the popular wine saver device, the coconut opener looks like no other kitchen gadget. Once you understand how it works, it makes perfect sense. Almost 12 inches long, the opener has a wide wooden handle that’s easy to grasp. At one end is a curved metal piece that functions like a pick to make a neat hole in one of the coconut’s eyes. After the prized watery liquid is poured out, a sturdy metal strip at the other end is used for whacking around the fruit’s circumference so the pieces can be separated. How easy. Available at Kitchen Outfitters, Acton Woods Plaza, 342 Great Road, Acton, 978-263-1955; Tags Hardware, Porter Square Shopping Center, 29 White St., Cambridge, 617-868-7711; and The Boston Shaker, 69 Holland St., Somerville, 617-718-2999.
