Sample butters from Vermont and Europe – The Boston Globe

A 5-kilo basket (11 pounds) of butter from France’s Charentes-Poitou region arrives several times a year at The Cheese Shop in Concord. The butter in the cooler looks so majestic that discussions about it and other artisanal butters with grassy or cheese flavors, tang, or nuttiness inspired the shop to organize the Battle of the Butters. This competitive butter tasting takes place on May 23 from noon to 4 p.m. (no charge, just appear). The lineup, sampled on baguette slices, includes butters from Vermont, France, and Switzerland, goat butter from England, and an Italian variety made with buffalo milk. “We’re obsessed with great butter,” says owner Peter Lovis, “and love the frivolity of a butter tasting.” The Cheese Shop, 29 Walden St., Concord, 978-369-5778.
