From the Bar: Backbar’s flagship cocktail – The Boston Globe

Raul Zelaya for The Boston Globe

A spot once claimed by Union Square locals and now popular by those seeking the ultimate cocktail destination, Backbar is still hard to find. The joy of actually locating it can be the start of an absolute stellar cocktail experience. Known as “the bar in the back” (the back of Journeyman restaurant, that is; both are located in an alley behind Bronwyn restaurant), Backbar is lead by Sam Treadway, one of Boston’s best-known bartenders. He has assembled a team in the Somerville spot that delivers bold flavors, variety, and an atmosphere that is truly electric. The bar’s flagship cocktail, The Model T, named after the location’s former operation as a Ford dealership almost 100 years ago, is a delicious example of what’s on the menu. This Manhattan variant is made new with the sweet herbal liqueur Chartreuse, which blends beautifully with sweet vermouth and caramel notes of bourbon whiskey.
