5 New Year’s Appetizers To Throw Together Now

5 New Year’s Appetizers To Throw Together Now

If you’re the one who’s having people over, let me remind you that “fancy” doesn’t have to mean “hard to make.” I won’t go as far as to say you can throw together the following appetizers with stuff you already have in the house. If you’re anything like me, you don’t have a pantry brimming with expensive ingredients chirping “Use me!” You have half a box of brown sugar, a few candy canes, and some Gatorade mix. So you’ll have to do a bit of shopping. Not a lot, though. And when you get home, you’ll be able to turn out a tray (or platter, or crock, or whatever) of very impressive hors-d’oeuvres that look and taste as though they took ages to prepare.

Which is probably the best we can hope for, at least until someone figures out how to get rid of New Year’s Eve.

1. White Pizza Appetizers

White Pizza Appetizers

You could top a square of puff pastry with a circle of puff pastry, and people would still love it. But it’s way better turned into these flaky little pizzas, which can be dressed up or down depending on your mood and the ingredients you have on hand.
2. Apricot-Almond Bruschetta with Melted Brie

It’s so nice to find a bruschetta recipe that doesn’t call for A) fresh tomatoes; B) rubbing the bread with fresh tomatoes. This version is perfect for winter: rich, cheese-y, sweet, salty, and crunchy all at the same time. Oh, and great-looking, too.

3. Hotter-Than-Hades Steak-and Salas-Bites

The recipe note says these are great at Halloween, which I guess is how they got their name. Since they’re equally great on New Year’s Eve, let’s rename them! Jollier Than January … Nicer Than New Year’s … um … okay, let’s not rename them. Let’s just scarf ‘em down. And pat ourselves on the back for having made the steak and salsa a day in advance.Cocktail Sausages

4. Cocktail Sausages

Cocktail “sausages.” Right. They come awfully close to mini hot dogs, don’t you think? Hosts are a little bit ashamed of serving them, and guests are a little bit ashamed of eating them. Eating so many of them, too! Which is exactly why the cycle continues

Sizzled Citrus Shrimp

5. Sizzled Citrus Shrimp

For many people, it’s not a party without shrimp. Which is presumptuous, but also kind of true. I love this recipe because it’s so much more vibrant and interesting than the usual pink, clammy dunk-in-cocktail-sauce shrimp. And it’s made from ingredients you may actually have in the house!
